Fluoride Treatment

Dental caries is one of the oldest and most common disease affecting humans. They affect teeth in stages and slowly destruct its structure .Usually it is pain and discomfort that guides most of the patients to clinic but by that time , extend of destruction might reach deeper structures.

Acid-generating metabolic processes in localized accumulations of bacteria eventually affect the tooth surface and cause decay.

Oral hygiene is one of the most important factor to ensure good dental health. Eventhough tooth brushing , flossing , use of mouth washes helps to remove plaque or soft deposit surrounding the teeth to an extent , its always better to have regular dental visits.

Fluoride application is a method to prevent tooth decay by fighting with the bacteria which harm dental health. They create a stronger outer layer that resists bacterial penetration inhibiting mineral loss. This procedure has gained more popularity in pediatric field but still this can also be applied on adult teeth if required.

Fluoride application is mainly indicated in

  • Caries active children
  • Children under salivary medications
  • Mentally and physically challenged children

Too much or too little fluoride fluoride can be harmful. Too little amount will not strengthen the teeth whereas higher amount can result in white patches on tooth which is known as fluorosis.
So that its always better to get expert advice before proceeding with the treatment.

Daily supplement of fluoride comes from tea, water, fish, salt etc. Therefore parents are advised to keep an eye on the diet of children, providing them with the best diet food and also for those who live in areas with community water supply rich in fluoride, its important to regularly check for dental fluorosis.

Fluoride varnishes are available in the field of dentistry which comes in the form of gels and liquids. These can be directly applied on to the tooth surface under professional supervision.
They ensure more fluoride release locally with much stronger concentration at required amount.

These treatments provide more fluoride than what other sources provide and is completely non invasive ,simple and quick technique which can be carried out in a short dental visit.

Patients exposed to fluoride are less likely to develop caries and can also revert back initial carious lesions. Thus Fluoride has proven to be an effective therapy in reducing the prevalence of dental caries in infants, children, adolescents, and persons with special needs.
