Are you tired of having misaligned teeth making you feel embarrassed while interacting socially?

Social anxiety is a major issue faced by people with misaligned and irregular teeth.

If you or your dear ones are concerned about the same, don’t worry, we will help you to fix it at the earliest.

All of us differ in the way of arrangement of teeth, some might have a very normal and harmonious arrangement whereas many have slight deviations from the normal. All these are common and crooked teeth affect millions of people across the globe.

Growing age is the best time for orthopedic treatment and does not hesitate to bring your kids to the Dental clinic for treatment during this time rather than waiting for the child to get older.

In ideal conditions, teeth should rest in a harmonious fashion with the upper jaw resting over the lower jaw with no gaps and crowding. Occlusion tells how your teeth rest when you bite down and malocclusion happens when there is any unfavorable condition affecting your normal bite/occlusion.

Facemask is a device used in patients with CLASS III MALOCCLUSION or on those with a reverse relationship of the jaws where lower teeth are placed anterior (in front) to upper teeth. This occurs as a result of skeletal imbalance and requires correction during the growth period which is usually by 7 to 12 years of age. This orthopedic appliance can quickly eliminate the need for fixed braces treatment and surgical conditions in the future.

Types of Class III Condition

TRUE CLASS III

– where the culprit is your upper or lower jaw or both.

PSEUDO CLASS III

– can occur because of functional shift.

Now you might be wondering about the etiology behind it.

It can be genetic in some cases and environmental in others like in Cleft surgery patients, mouth breathers, and those with large tongues. All these conditions direct to CLASS III MALOCCLUSIONS and once you identify, get treatment at the earliest.

Parts of Mask Fask

Facemask consists of a stainless steel framework with attached pads over the chin and forehead.

Also, have a cross piece that attaches intraorally via bands (inside the mouth).

These band or elastics exerts extra oral force from the back towards the front and downwards

Altogether they work as a unit to bring the upper jaw forward and downward while restricting the growth of the lower jaw by taking anchorage from the forehead and chin. Hence, they bring harmony by matching the growth of the upper jaw with the lower jaw.

Early treatment can make future surgery less imposing even if you need surgery. Hence, it can reduce the need for orthognathic surgery.

Moreover, this can improve your child’s psychosocial development by removing the social barrier. School-growing kids are always under the influence of their peer group and will be more mentally down if bullied than adults. Also leaving these conditions untreated can cause permanent/irreversible changes in the gingiva, bone, and other supporting structures. Hence, it’s always recommended to get treatment as soon as you notice the changes.

Will there be any problem if I skip wearing facemask ?

Unless recommended by the dentist it’s not wise to skip wearing it even for a day as it’s best to wear it as much time as possible. Moreover, skipping can also result in reverting back to stage one. So it’s recommended to wear it for 8 to 12 hours during the evening and night for good results.
