Bad Breath

Everyone in their life at one point or another would have experienced bad breath. Eventhough its totally disturbing condition, it is quite common.

Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath. It can be physiological or pathological.

Transient odor caused by food intake, smoking, medications, and also the odor that comes at morning does not reveal any health problem and are examples of physiological halitosis. But persistent malodour reflect some underlying problems.

Gum diseases and its sequale, tongue coating are the most common cause of pathological oral malodour or malodour as a result of a disease. These problems harbour bacteria and further cause bad breath.

Poor oral hygiene

This is the most common cause of oral malodour. Improper cleaning of oral cavity after feed can result in poor hygiene

It is very important to brush and floss daily to ensure good health

Tongue coating

Tongue coating consists of bacteria along with food debris,  its removal is not that easy as they adhere tightly on to the irregularities of tongue.

Dry mouth

Saliva plays an important role in maintaining oral hygiene by flushing out debris and waste products from teeth and adjacent structures.

When we sleep, salivary flow diminishes, which is one reason why bad breath is common when one wakes up after a good sleep. This condition is also known as physiological halitosis

Other causes are medications, alcohol, diabetes etc..

Oral infections

The most likely causes of oral malodour includes the presence of gum infections, abscesses and dental decays. These conditions harbour certain potential pathogenic bacteria, which can make the whole scenario worse.

Malodour gives a hint that something wrong is happening within the body and oral cavity. Professional advice and care should be taken as soon as they are detected

One can temporarily mask malodour with rinses, chewing gums and sprays. But for a permanent solution , one should seek professional dental treatment and advice at the earliest.

So if you have bad breath that doesn’t go away, schedule an appointment with us now .

If malodour is due to poor oral hygiene, scaling procedure should help. Or else further investigations should be carried out to diagnose the cause.
